FP Organization

Materials

Experiment instructions and other documentation will be provided via ILIAS.

Safety instructions

The Radiation and Laser Safety Instructions are obligatory requirements for participation.

Previous participation in Radiation and Laser Safety Instructions will be accepted if within one year before the anticipated end of the lab course.

Protocol writing

  • A protocol contains
    • Introduction, where the goals of the experiment are described and the important concepts are introduced
    • Description of the experiment, where the experimental setup and measurement procedures are documented
    • Analysis and discussion, where the data are analyzed, results are calculated, and uncertainties are discussed
  • The protocol can be handwritten or printed from a digital file. For printed protocols, the handwritten record of measurement data taken during the experiment ("raw data") should be attached.
  • The record of measurement data should be signed by the assistant at the end of the experiment.
  • Data analysis can be performed using "Origin" or "Root" software, which is installed on the computers in the Praktikum. Other software may be used if arranged with the assistant.
  • Each group of two students may submit a single shared protocol.

Seminar talk

This applies to FP-II and FP-EDU only:

  • The measurement procedures and results of the long experiment will be presented as a seminar talk. It includes a coherent presentation of the theoretical and experimental basics, as well as a discussion of the experiment's goals and their relevance. The seminar talk should be directed toward fellow students, who may not have performed the experiment themselves.
  • The seminar talk is scheduled for 40 minutes, i.e. around 20 minutes per speaker, plus ca. 20 minutes for questions and answers. A laptop computer, beamer and laser pointer will be provided. The files for the seminar talk (PowerPoint, PDF) should be copied to a USB memory stick.
  • The seminar talk is assest individually for each speaker and contributes to the total FP grade. The criteria for the seminar talk grade are style of the presentation (oral presentation, quality of slides) and the background knowledge.
  • Ideally, the talk should be discussed with the assistant prior to the seminar.
