Software workaround for Windows 98 with new installation.
- This is applicable ONLY with Windows 98.
- Again! This will not work for XP/2000.
- You must have a non-Sony Windows 98 CD for installation.
- almost all programs have to be reinstalled after installation
(e.g. Word, Excel, DVD-Player, ... (registry keys will be deleted during
new installation))
- some programs from your Sony CDs won't work anymore (they check
for Sony-windows running during setup process)
- you need some drivers (either from my page or from
http://www.vaio-link.com) for display / modem / audio / firewire
- please read carefully and don't make me responsible for possible
data loss. The description is correct (tested several times) and you
will succeed if you follow the steps carefully.
The trick to avoid shutdowns by ACPI is to disable it. Sounds easy, but
it is not!
The windows version provided with Sony Vaio laptops does not show this
feature in device manager, so it can not be disabled.
What we do here, is to install a non-Sony windows version, where ACPI
can be disabled. (There is the alternative
just to delete the drivers for ACPI)
After that our system will run, as if it had never had the shutdown
problem.
There are two options now:
- Installation with deleting all the files from your C: partition,
i.e. formatting this partition, (you can backup them by booting up in
"safe mode" any copying them via ethernet or copying them to partition
D: if you have two partitions) or
- installation without deleting any files from hdd. You can even
"switch back" to your old Sony-windows after having installed the new
non-Sony version!
Detailed information on how to re-install Windows 98.
1.) If you want to format partition C:
- save all important files to floppy, partition D (if you have
second partition) or different PC (over serial, parallel, IR or LAN
connection). Second partition will not be affected by procedure!
- download windows 98 bootdisk here
- unzip files into the same folder, insert formatted floppydisk
into drive a: and doubleclick on 98BOT10A.exe
- boot system from floppydisk (perhaps you'll have to change "first
boot device" / "boot sequence" in bios).
- you should see "a:\>" on dos-screen. If system starts windows,
you did not boot from floppy drive (enable floppy boot in BIOS!)
- type what is between quotation marks and confirm with "enter"
formating drive c: - "format c:"
insert Non-Sony-Win98-CD. Following commands will copy setup-files to
hdd (you'll never need this cd again!) - "md c:\win98org"
- "cd c:\win98org"
- "copy r:\win98\*.* c:"
- "c:"
start installation with: - "setup /p i"
Note: for some versions it is "install /p i"
go to point 3.)
2.) If you don't want to format partition C:
- save all important files to floppy, partition D or different PC.
your files will not be deleted! this is if something goes wrong!
- insert Non-Sony-Win98-CD (cdrom assumed as drive f:\)
- create folder c:\win98org
- copy all files and dirs from f:\win98 to c:\win98org
- start in dos-mode by
- pressing F8 on startup and choosing ms-dos-mode OR
- clicking run...shutdown...start in dos-mode
- following is to rename files, so that the new installation will
not be able to determine, that there's already a windows version
installed:
type in what is between " and " and press enter after every
command/line:
- "c:"
- "cd \windows"
- "dir win.??? > winfiles.txt" i.e. to backup the original
names of win.???-files.
- "ren win.??? win.??1"
- "cd \"
- "ren windows winold"
- "cd \win98org"
- "setup /p i" or "win98\setup /p i" depending on what directory
you copied files into.
Note: for some versions it is "install /p i"
go to point 3.)
3.)
- Installation starts... choose "standard installation" not laptop.
- when finished (remove floppy!) disable following features (you
might have to start windows in "safe mode" to keep it "alive"):
- Go to Run-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager-System
devices (screenshot)
- Right click and select Properties for
- Advanced Power Management support
- Intel 83271EB Power Management Controller
- Go to the bottom of the panel and toggle "Disable in this
hardware profile".
- Do not remove; just disable it!
- Restart system
You should now have a non-randomly-shutting-down-system.
